Personal project
Idea
Set in the year 2340, after decades of war between humans and AI, the film explores the fragile relationship between a lone survivor and a dormant war machine. What begins as a confrontation transforms into a symbolic dance, revealing their shared history and the possibility of reconciliation between humanity and technology.
Final Film
The final film combines cinematic landscapes, HUD perspectives, and choreographed movement to tell a post-apocalyptic story of conflict and rediscovery. Through the desert wasteland, flashbacks, and synchronized dance, the narrative blurs the line between battle and intimacy. The climax reveals the machine’s true identity as the protagonist’s long-lost companion, turning a story of survival into one of memory and reconciliation.
VFX Breakdown
The VFX workflow of Resonance 2340 combined environment design, creature animation, and cinematic effects to create a post-apocalyptic atmosphere with symbolic depth.
Environment & Atmosphere: The wasteland setting was built with abandoned structures, robot wreckage, and layered textures to convey desolation. Particle simulations for dust and wind enhanced scale and immersion.
Robot Design & Rigging: A large-scale robot asset was modeled, rigged, and animated to transition between mechanical combat poses and human-like dance gestures.
Animation & Choreography: The confrontation was reinterpreted as a symbolic duet, with motion blending between rigid mechanics and fluid choreography. Flashbacks were intercut to link past and present.
Visual Effects: HUD overlays represented the robot’s perspective, including scanning and memory reactivation. Smoke, sparks, and shell-breaking effects marked the robot’s awakening and transformation.
Compositing & Editing: Cross-cutting between flashbacks and present sequences created emotional resonance, while color grading shifted from cold desaturation to warmer tones in the reconciliation, symbolizing hope.
Overall, the breakdown demonstrates how VFX elements—rigging, animation, particle effects, and compositing—were integrated into storytelling, turning a survival conflict into a cinematic metaphor for memory and reconciliation.
Goal
The goal of this project was to merge choreography with cinematic storytelling, using VFX and animation to transform combat into a metaphor for memory and connection. I aimed to refine my skills in creature rigging, motion design, and environmental effects while learning how to integrate symbolic meaning into a post-apocalyptic sci-fi narrative.

Critical Reflection
Our aim was to combine post-apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetics with symbolic storytelling, turning a confrontation between man and machine into a choreographed reunion. From a VFX perspective, the main challenge lay in balancing scale and emotion: the robot needed to appear massive and mechanical, yet capable of subtle gestures that conveyed memory and reconciliation.
Technically, rigging and animating the robot pushed us to find ways of blending rigid mechanics with fluid choreography. Particle effects such as smoke, sparks, and dust were carefully layered to reinforce atmosphere without overwhelming the scene. The HUD overlays and flashback compositing also demanded precision, as they were essential in linking the present with fragmented memories.
Collaboration played a crucial role in shaping the project. Storyboarding and shot planning required us to constantly adjust ideas to maintain both narrative clarity and visual coherence. Through this process, I learned how to integrate multiple creative perspectives, and how communication and task division directly affect production efficiency.
Looking back, I am proud that we managed to turn a survival story into a metaphorical dance of memory and reconciliation. If given more time, I would further refine the robot’s motion transitions and experiment with more dynamic particle simulations for greater visual impact. Overall, this project strengthened my ability to merge technical execution with symbolic narrative, and deepened my understanding of how VFX can carry emotional as well as cinematic weight.
